SB 1147: livestock compensation; appropriation
Sponsor: Senator Kern, LD 27
Committee on Land, Agriculture & Rural Affairs
Overview
Appropriates $250,000 from the state General Fund (GF) in FY 2025 to the Livestock Compensation Fund (Fund).
History
Laws 2015, Chapter 172 established the Fund and is administered by the Livestock Loss Board (Board). The Fund consists of:
1) federal monies;
2) legislative appropriations from the state GF;
3) public and private grants; and
4) private donations.
The Board may accept and spend federal monies, public and private grants, gifts, contributions and devices to compensate landowners, lessees and livestock operators for:
1) wolf depredation on livestock;
2) participating in a pay-for-presence program implemented by the Board; and
3) implementing avoidance measures to prevent wolf depredation on livestock.
Monies in the Fund are continuously appropriated, exempt from lapsing, do not revert to the state GF at the end of the FY and must be used to supplement, not supplant, monies otherwise appropriated to the Arizona Game and Fish Department (A.R.S. § 17-493).
Avoidance measures means nonlethal actions taken or education provided by livestock owners to reduce the likelihood of livestock depredation (A.R.S. § 17-492).
