ARIZONA STATE SENATE

Fifty-Sixth Legislature, Second Regular Session

FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1154

dental board; dental hygienists

Purpose

Increases, from two to three, the number of licensed dental hygienists required to be on the State Board of Dental Examiners (BODEX).

Background

The practice of dentistry in Arizona is regulated by BODEX, who provides services and information to members of the dental profession and the general public through examination, licensure, complaint investigation and enforcement processes.  BODEX consists of 11 Governor-appointed members, including 6 licensed dentists, 2 licensed dental hygienists, 2 public members and one business entity member. Members serve four-year terms and may not serve more than two consecutive terms. Dental hygienist board members may participate in all board proceedings and determinations, except in preparing, giving and grading examinations that do not relate to dental hygiene procedures (A.R.S. § 32-1203).  Board members are eligible to receive compensation in an amount of up to $250 for each day of work spent in service to the Board, as well as reimbursement of necessary expenses incurred while performing Board functions (A.R.S. § 32-1206).

Dental hygienist means any person who is licensed and engaged in the general practice of dental hygiene and all related and associated duties, including educational, clinical and therapeutic dental hygiene procedures (A.R.S § 32-1201).

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1.   Increases, from two to three, the number of licensed dental hygienists required to be on BODEX.

2.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
