FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1445

 

appropriations; Yuma/La Paz community college

Purpose

Appropriates $9,250,000 from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2025 to the Yuma/ La Paz Community College District for outlined programs.

Background

Community college districts may be organized for a single county, two or more contiguous counties or an existing community college district and contiguous counties that are not part of a district if the proposed district has a net assessed valuation of at least $448,017,200 and minimum population of 42,000 persons who are at least 15 years old (A.R.S. § 15-1402). Founded in 1963 the Arizona Western College has 12 different locations and offers over 170 degrees and certificates (AZWestern).

S.B. 1445 appropriates a total of $9,250,000 from the state GF in FY 2025 to the Yuma/La Paz Community College District.

Provisions

1.   Appropriates the following amounts from the state GF in FY 2025 to the Yuma/La Paz Community College District:

a)   $3,000,000 to modernize the fire academy program to serve the communities of San Luis, Somerton and Parker;

b)   $2,250,000 to establish a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning skills training program for incarcerated individuals;

c)   $2,000,000 to create a hydrogen fuel, electric vehicle and hybrid curriculum for automotive education;

d)   $1,500,000 to start a commercial driver's license program to support the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and the Yuma Proving Grounds; and

e)   $500,000 to support apprenticeship programs in targeted industries facing skilled worker shortages.

2.   Exempts the appropriations from lapsing.

3.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
