appropriation; university of Arizona; Arizona geological survey; intent

Purpose

Appropriates $750,000 and six FTEs from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2025 to the University of Arizona (UofA) for the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS).

Background

By statute, the AZGS must be under the jurisdiction of the UofA and any expenses of the AZGS must be paid by annual appropriation from the state GF (A.R.S. § 27-102). The mission of the AZGS is to: 1) provide geologic information to enhance public understanding of the state's geologic character, geologic hazards and limitations and mineral resources; 2) inform, advise and assist the Arizona public regarding geological processes, Earth materials, landscapes and the development and use of mineral resources; 3) provide technical advice and assistance to industry while encouraging the wise and prudent use of Arizona lands and mineral resources; and 4) provide technical geologic advice and assistance to state, tribal and local civil authorities (AZGS).
