Purpose
Declares that the Legislature must remain in session during presidential election years and that the Legislature may appoint presidential electors.
Background
The chairman of the state committee of a political party that is qualified for representation on the ballot must appoint candidates for the office of presidential elector equal to the number of U.S. Senators and Representatives from Arizona (A.R.S. § 16-344). A county board of supervisors must prepare and provide ballots containing the names of all persons whose certificates of nomination have been filed (A.R.S. § 16-503).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Declares that the Legislature must remain in session during years in which presidential elections are held and that the Legislature, and no other official may appoint presidential electors in accordance with the United State Constitution.
