Sponsor: Representative Marshall, LD 7

Committee on Public Safety & Law Enforcement

Overview

Appropriates $10,000,000 in specified amounts from the state General Fund (GF) in FY 2026 to outlined community college districts for law enforcement training programs.

History

A community college district governing board must employ, if deemed necessary, police officers. Police officers who have received a certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) have the authority and power of peace officers. AZPOST must recommend curricula for law enforcement and intelligence training in universities, colleges and community colleges in conjunction with the governing body of the educational institution (A.R.S. §§ 15-1444; 41-1822).

Peace officers are sheriffs of counties, constables, marshals, policemen of cities and towns, commissioned personnel of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, personnel who are employed by DOC and the Department of Juvenile Corrections and police officers who are appointed by community college district governing boards who have received a certificate from AZPOST (A.R.S. § 1-215).
