Overview
Allows candidates seeking office for a district or geographic area that contains multiple counties to collect signatures on a petition form if the signer is registered to vote, resides in the district or geographic region and is otherwise qualified to sign the petition.
History
A person wanting to become a candidate for election and have their name printed on the official ballot must file a nomination paper and nomination petition 120 to 150 days before a primary election. A nomination petition is the form used to obtain the required number of signatures from qualified electors to become a political candidate. After the first signature is collected for a nomination petition, the person wishing to become a candidate must file a statement of interest with the appropriate filing officer stating their name, political party and office they are seeking (A.R.S. §§ 16-314, 16-341).
Provisions
1. Requires nomination petition forms to use the exact language as detailed in statute. (Sec 1, 2)
2. Allows a person seeking office for a district or geographic area that contains multiple counties to collect signatures on a nomination petition form from qualified electors who are registered to vote and are from any county in the district or geographic area if the signer is otherwise qualified to sign the petition. (Sec 1, 2)
3. Conforms the language of the nomination petition form to the previous provision. (Sec 1, 2)
4. Requires an individual seeking an elected office to strictly comply with related statutory requirements. (Sec 1, 2)
