Overview
Continues the Mental Health Transition Program (Program) for 5 years.
History
Laws 2021, Chapter 403 § 14 directed the Department of Corrections (Department) to establish the Mental Health Transition Pilot Program to provide eligible inmates with transition services in the community. Inmates who participate in the program and are not convicted of specified crimes can be released from confinement three months earlier than their earliest release date based on the inmate's risks and needs. The Department must contract with private or nonprofit entities to provide up to 500 eligible inmates with services each fiscal year. Services can include healthcare assistance, case management, housing and psychiatric management. The Department is required to conduct an annual study to determine recidivism rates of inmates participating in the program. This pilot program is set to expire August 1, 2026 (A.R.S. § 31-291).
