SB 1600: patient rights; health care services

Overview

Declares a patient's rights in relation to receiving services from a healthcare professional.

History

Arizona Administrative Code outlines patient rights as it pertains to interactions with healthcare professionals. A.A.C. R9-10-212 states that the Department of Health Services Director must require, including but not limited to, that: 1) a patient is treated with dignity, respect and consideration; 2) a patient is not subjected to abuse, neglect, exploitation, coercion, manipulation or sexual abuse or harassment; 3) a patient or their representative either consents to or refuses treatment, except in an emergency; and 4) a patient is informed of alternatives and costs to treatments.  

Provisions

1.   States that a patient in Arizona has the right to receive healthcare services from a healthcare professional who abides by the following principles:

a)   to act only in the patient's best interest;

b)   to do no harm; and

c) to ensure that each medical decision, except in an emergency, requires informed consent. (Sec. 1)
