animal bites; owner contact information
Purpose
Requires a person responsible for a dog that bites a person in a public or private place to provide the owner's contact information to the person who suffered the dog bite.
Background
Injury to any person or damage to any property by a dog while at large is the full responsibility of the dog owner or the persons responsible for the dog when the damages were inflicted. The owner of a dog that bites a person when the person is in or on a public place or lawfully in or on a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, is liable for damages suffered by the person bitten, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner's knowledge of its viciousness (A.R.S. ยงยง 11-1020 and 11-1025).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Requires a person who owns or is responsible for the care of a dog that bites a person when the person is in a public place or lawfully in a private place to provide the owner's contact information to the person who suffered the dog bite.
2. Makes technical changes.
3. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
