FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2606

 

appropriation; local border support

Purpose

Appropriates $50,000,000 from the state General Fund (state GF) in FY 2026 to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) for local border support that includes grants to cities, towns and counties and funding local law enforcement officer positions as prescribed.

Background

DPS is responsible for creating and coordinating services for use by local law enforcement agencies in protecting the public safety and for formulating plans with a view to establish modern services for prevention of crime, apprehension of violators, training of law enforcement personnel and the promotion of public safety. DPS consists of four Divisions: 1) Arizona Highway Patrol; 2) Narcotics Enforcement and Criminal Investigation; 3) Scientific Criminal Analysis; and
4) Training and Education (A.R.S. ยงยง
41-1711 and 41-1712).

      H.B. 2606 appropriates $50,000,000 from the state GF in FY 2026 to DPS for local border support.

Provisions

1.   Appropriates $50,000,000 from the state GF in FY 2026 to DPS for local border support.

2.   Requires DPS to use the monies:

a)   to fund local law enforcement officer positions for border drug interdiction to deter and apprehend any individuals who are charged with drug trafficking, human smuggling, illegal immigration and other border-related crimes; and

b)   for grants to cities, towns and counties for costs associated with prosecuting and detaining individuals who are charged with drug trafficking, human smuggling, illegal immigration and other border-related crimes.

3.   Allows DPS to fund all capital-related equipment.

4.   Becomes effective on the general effective date.
