ARIZONA STATE SENATE

Fifty-Seventh Legislature, First Regular Session

FACT SHEET FOR H.C.M. 2006

Jimmie Preston; memorial bridge

Purpose

Urges the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names (ASBGHN) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (U.S. BGN) to name the truss bridge in Cameron as the Jimmie Preston Memorial Bridge.

Background

The AZBGHN is responsible for: 1) determining the most appropriate names for geographic features and places of historical significance in Arizona; and 2) establishing or designating a highway or area as a parkway, historic road or scenic road that is of geographic or historical significance in Arizona (A.R.S. ยง 41-835.02). The U.S. BGN maintains uniform geographic name usage throughout the federal government (U.S. BGN).

Originally built in 1911 and named for U.S. Senator Ralph H. Cameron, the Cameron Truss Bridge is located on U.S. Route 89 and spans the Little Colorado River connecting the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation (ADOT).

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

Provisions

1.   Urges the ASBGHN and U.S. BGN to take appropriate steps to name the truss bridge in Cameron, Arizona near U.S. Route 89 Cameron Roadway as the Jimmie Preston Memorial Bridge.

2.   Instructs the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to approve, place and maintain appropriate signage to identify the Jimmie Preston Memorial Bridge.

3.   Directs the Secretary of State to transmit copies of this memorial to the Chairpersons of the ASBGHN and U.S BGN, the Director of ADOT and the President of the Navajo Nation.
